-acetazolamide to prevent and treat high-altitude sickness
-ibuprofen and paracetamol for headaches
-anti-sickness medicine, such as promethazine, for nausea
Promethazine, ibuprofen, and paracetamol are all available from pharmacies. You do not need a prescription to buy them.
Acetazolamide 250mg tablets works to treat altitude sickness by increasing the amount of urine produced, consequently altering the acidity of the blood. This leads to a reduction in fluid in the lungs and around the brain. The result is improved breathing and relief from the symptoms of altitude sickness.
The price quoted is for the consultation and for 10 x acetazolamide tablets. The dose is half a tablet taken twice daily starting 1-2 days before starting your climb and continuing whilst at high altitude.
This vaccine is not suitable for pregnant women or women who are trying for a baby. The chickenpox vaccination should be administered with at least a 4-week gap from some other vaccinations. If you have had another vaccination recently, contact our pharmacist and we can advise.
The price you will be quoted is for your consultation and one dose of vaccine – for full protection you will need two doses, four to eight weeks apart (your pharmacist will advise when the second dose is due).
This vaccine is not generally available on the NHS.
The screening service is designed to establish a patient’s Total Cholesterol (TC)/High Density Lipid (HDL) ratio and give an indication of their blood lipid profile. The procedure involves a finger-prick test the result will be available within 5 minutes.

THIS SERVICE WILL BEGIN ON THE 1ST OF OCTOBER 2024 AND RUN UNTIL THE END OF MARCH 2025
Community pharmacies can provide free NHS Flu vaccinations for patients who are 18 and over and in an eligible group.
For more information about who is eligible please visit the following website:
https://gov.wales/flu-vaccination-programme
If you do not meet the criteria to have an NHS flu jab, we can offer the vaccination on a private basis.
Alternatively, you can contact the pharmacy and one of our team can assist you.
This is an NHS funded service and is available to non-pregnant women aged 16 to 64 and may involve a urine test.
If you have symptoms of a UTI, such as burning pain when urinating, needing to urinate more often or have cloudy urine - you could receive antibiotics without the need for an appointment with your GP. If this is a regular problem, you are diabetic or are post-menopausal you may need to be referred to a GP.
The vaccine protects you for 10 years after which, you will require another booster.
The price you will be quoted is for your consultation and one dose of vaccine – one dose will protect you in the short term (for about 1 year), but you will need a booster 6-12 months later for long-term protection (up to 25 years).
You may be eligible for a free hepatitis A vaccination on the NHS from your GP practice – your GP or Practice Nurse can advise you.
The course consists of three doses. The second injection is given four weeks after the first, and the third injection should be given five months later (completing the course in six months). If travelling at short notice, you may be able to get an accelerated course. You will receive the second injection after seven days, followed by the third injection at least 14 days after the second. To complete the full course in time, you need to get the first dose at least one month before travel. You would require a fourth dose after 1 year to get full immunity.
The quoted price is for each dose of vaccine. A 10% discount is available if all 3 doses are paid up front - please speak to one of our pharmacists to discuss this.
Once you have completed the course, you usually won’t need another booster for five years although they are sometimes recommended after exposure to the disease.
Take one tablet on the night of arrival at your destination about 30 minutes before bed. Repeat this the following night.
The price quoted covers the cost of the consultation and for 4 tablets which should be sufficient for the journey out and your return.
Not suitable for under 18s, pregnant or breast-feeding patients. Also if you have liver or kidney problems, have epilepsy, uncontrolled or severe high blood pressure or on oral blood thinners then this medication should be avoided.
Which tablets are best for you also depends on your medical history, the activities you have planned or sometimes your own personal preferences or circumstance.
Please note that the cost of treatment may vary, depending on the length of your trip and the medication you and our pharmacist agree is best for you - however the ones that we generally issue are Malarone (£3 per tablet) and Doxycycline (£0.65 a capsule). The cost of antimalarials for children may differ.
Malaria prevention tablets are not available on the NHS.
The symptoms vary from person to person but usually the infection involves a severe headache, a high temperature and vomiting. Some patients also suffer from a stiff neck, are unusually sensitive to light and feel exhausted. The most typical symptom of meningitis is a skin rash, which occurs in many but not all cases.
The meningitis ACWY vaccine provides protection against all four meningitis types included in its name. It is particularly suitable for travellers who could be at risk of contracting one of these.
If you are planning to travel abroad, you need to check whether you will be entering a meningococcal meningitis risk area. It is particularly prominent in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, an area sometimes referred to as the “meningitis belt”. Here, meningitis A is the most frequent cause of the illness, but there have been recent outbreaks of W, X and C.
The meningitis vaccine consists of one single dose, which is administered by injection. You should arrange an appointment with your pharmacist at least two to three weeks before the date of your departure.
It is recommended that students attending university for the first time, receive a single dose of Meningitis ACWY. There is currently a routine NHS vaccine programme for all children in year 9.
No boosters are currently required except for certificate purposes. Some countries, for example Saudi Arabia, demand that you provide a meningitis ACWY certificate prior to entering.
Please note that this does NOT protect you from meningitis B.
The price you will be quoted is for your consultation and one dose of vaccine – you only need one dose.
Norethisterone is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Rather than allowing for the natural fall in progesterone during your period, norethisterone keeps your progesterone levels elevated. This delays the shedding of your womb lining, and therefore delays your period. Take one 5mg tablet, three times a day, starting three days before your expected period.
The price quoted is for your consultation and for a course of 30 tablets (taken for 10 days) which would be suitable for a week-long delay. We can supply up to a 2-week delay (for 14 days plus the 3 days prior to expected onset of period) for an additional fee. Menstruation usually occurs within 3 days of finishing the course of norethistorone.
This service is only suitable for females over the age of 16 who are not pregnant or breast-feeding and not on any kind of oral contraceptives. Liver disease, epilepsy and psychiatric disorders would also exclude you from using this treatment. For full details please contact the pharmacy.
The pre-exposure rabies vaccine is administered with an intramuscular injection and consists of three doses. The three doses need to be given within a specific period, so you should begin the treatment at least one month before travelling. You will receive the second dose 7 days after the first, the third dose should be received on the 28th day. If there isn’t enough time then the third dose can be administered on the 21st day.
The price quoted is for your consultation and one dose of vaccine – a full course is three doses unless you have had a course of vaccination before. A 10% discount is available if you purchase the whole course up front - please speak to one of our pharmacists if you would like to arrange this.
Rabies vaccination is not available on the NHS.
The rabies vaccine protects you for 10 years. If you are working with animals or are otherwise at a higher risk, more frequent boosters may be recommended.
The course consists of three doses. The second dose is given 1 – 3 months after the first. The third dose is given 5 – 12 months after the second dose.
You need the first two doses to be protected and the 2nd dose need to be given at least two weeks before travel. Therefore, you should get the first dose at around two months before travel – the earlier, the better.
If you are travelling at short notice, you may be able to have the first two doses 14 days apart. You need to start this course at least 4 weeks before travel to be fully protected by the time you go.
Once you have completed the three-dose course, you are protected for three years. You need a booster to remain protected once the three years are up. The price quoted is for a single vaccine - a 10% discount is available if the full course is paid for up front.
This is a one-to-one consultation with a pharmacist where we can determine all your requirements prior to travelling.
This can include appropriate vaccinations and malaria prevention medication but also period delay, altitude sickness, insect repellents and much more.
We always recommend doing this in plenty of time before travelling as many vaccines involve a course of doses which need to be started several weeks before travelling.
Travellers who are planning to visit high risk regions for travellers’ diarrhoea, and who will be unable to access medical help during their trip, may be advised to take medication with them to be able to treat the condition if they catch it.
The price quoted is for your consultation and for a three-day course of antibiotic tablets that can be taken with you on your travels for if it is needed.
There are two different typhoid vaccines available in the UK. One is administered orally, the other consists of a single-dose intramuscular injection. The oral vaccine consists of three capsules, which need to be taken on alternate days. This type of vaccine is not suitable for people with a weak immune system and is not recommended for children.
The price quoted is for your consultation and for one injection or three capsules (both of these provide a full course of treatment) and is effective for three years.
Many people have heard the myth that vaccines like the MMR vaccine have been linked to autism. This was due to one study that was completely discredited, written by a man who was stripped of his license to practice medicine in the UK. Since this study almost 20 years ago, no other study has shown this link to exist. Please do not avoid getting vaccinated as there is no such risk involved.
Start your course at least six weeks before travelling. You need two doses, with minimum a four week gap in between, and your second dose needs to be completed at least two weeks before travelling, making six weeks total. If you also require a Yellow Fever vaccine, you should have ideally a four-week gap between this and your MMR. This may also apply to a chickenpox vaccine and tuberculosis test, they should be done on the same day as MMR or allow a 4 week gap.
The vaccine can be taken from 12 months (9 months old in some cases), but we only provide this service to those over 18. The price you will be quoted is for your consultation and a single dose of vaccine.
There is no need for a booster dose of this vaccine.

Pneumococcal infections are caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae and can lead to pneumonia, blood poisoning (sepsis) and meningitis.
At their worst, they can cause permanent brain damage, or even kill.
The price of the vaccine varies depending on which version is chosen – your pharmacist will explain the difference and which is most suitable for you.
If you are 65 or over, you will be entitled to an NHS funded pneumonia vaccine through your GP.
Prices range from £40-£100
HPV infections do not usually cause any symptoms, and most people will not know they are infected.
The NHS has changed its guidance on how many HPV vaccinations are required. If you are starting a new course most people will only require 2 doses.
It is best to get vaccinated before you have sex for the first time as this means you are protected before you are first exposed to HPV although you will still benefit from the vaccine if you are already sexually active. Boosters are not currently recommended.
The listed price is for a single dose of vaccine.
The shingles vaccine is suitable for patients aged 50 years and is expected to reduce your risk of getting shingles. If you do go on to have the disease, your symptoms may be milder and the illness shorter. Two doses are required and the price listed is for each dose. The second dose would be required two months later.
If you turned 65 on or after 1st of September 2023, you will be entitled to an NHS funded shingles vaccine with your GP. You will remain eligible up until your 80th birthday. It is also offered to severely immuno-suppressed individuals aged 50 and over.
The virus tends to have a seasonal transmission pattern with peak transmissions occurring during the winter months like influenza. RSV spreads rapidly between humans and is not found in any other animal.
The incubation period for RSV is between 2-8 days and can be caught through respiratory droplets, which are usually coughs and sneezes. So to prevent transmission make sure you cover your mouth when you sneeze and always catch it, bin it, kill it just like the the famous COVID campaign.
RSV is a very common disease, and by 2 years of age most individuals in the UK will have caught the disease, the main cause of bronchiolitis in infants.
Protection against RSV is often only partial and individuals may be infected repeatedly with the same or different strains.
Current estimates for older adults suggest that there are approximately 1200 deaths per year in patients between 45 and 75 years of age and 4000 deaths in those over 75.
If you are age 60 or older, a vaccine is available to protect you from severe RSV. Talk to one of our pharmacists to see if it’s right for you.
THIS SERVICE WILL BEGIN ON THE 1ST OF OCTOBER 2024 AND RUN UNTIL THE END OF MARCH 2025

The course consists of two doses. The second dose needs to be given ideally 28 days after the first. You are protected from seven days after this. You need to get the first dose ideally five weeks before you travel to be able to complete the course in time.
Accelerated courses where the 2nd dose is administered 7 days after the 1st are also available if you are short on time.
The vaccine protects you for around 12 months, after which a booster would be required should you be at continued risk of the disease.
The price quoted is for a single dose of the vaccine.

It is available to female patients aged 19 and over who have had the condition already diagnosed by a GP. This is not suitable for anyone with any liver or kidney problems and who are pregnant or breast-feeding.
If the condition is severe or has rapidly worsened, then please see your GP.

Excellent service.
I arrived early for my appointment and were seen straight away.
A diagnosis and treatment was given within a very short time frame. A lot less then then previously experienced in a GP/ Health car practice. I didnt feel that the appointment was rushed in any way though, and had time to discuss the diagnosis and treatment.
I would definitely recommend to family and friends. I will also be using this pharmacist again under the common ailment scheme as well as my prescriptions and other queries - Natalie Walsh·
Pharmacist was extremely helpful & took time to make my daughter feel at ease through the consultation. Would use the service again
